Consumer Credit File Rights Under State and Federal Law
Required disclosure under the Credit Repair Organizations Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1679c.
You have a right to dispute inaccurate information in your credit report by contacting the credit bureau directly. However, you are not required to purchase the services of a credit repair company to have inaccurate information corrected.
You have a right to obtain a free copy of your credit report from a credit bureau. If your application for credit is denied, the credit bureau must provide your credit report to you free of charge upon your request.
You have a right to a free copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus once every twelve months by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com.
Under the Credit Repair Organizations Act, a credit repair organization:
- Cannot require you to sign a waiver of your rights
- Cannot charge you until services have been fully performed
- Must give you a written contract with specific terms
- Must give you three business days to cancel the contract
You have a right to cancel without charge any contract with a credit repair organization within three business days from the date you signed it.
You have a right to sue a credit repair company that violates the Credit Repair Organizations Act. This law prohibits deceptive practices by credit repair companies.
