Types of Collections and Their Impact

    Medical Collections

As of 2023, the three major bureaus no longer report paid medical collections. Unpaid medical debts under $500 are also excluded.

FICO 9 and VantageScore 3.0+ give less weight to medical collections than other types.

    Non-Medical Collections

    These include:

  1. Credit card charge-offs
  2. Utility bills
  3. Phone bills
  4. Rent (if reported)
  5. Personal loans
  6. These are treated with full weight by all scoring models.

    Pay-for-Delete Strategy

Some collectors will agree to remove the collection from your report in exchange for payment. Always get this agreement in writing BEFORE paying.

CreditBooster handles pay-for-delete negotiations as part of our dispute strategy, ensuring you never pay without a written removal agreement.
